The Dayton Printmakers Cooperative hosted the third workshop in their summer series this past weekend, and I had the opportunity to join in. This workshop was led by Kevin Harris and covered monotype, monoprints, and drypoint processes.
Ink: 1-lb Etching Ink, Black Vine #1014C. No modifiers were used.
Kevin began today’s session by conducting a monotype demo. A number of compositional materials were used, (i.e., cut paper, netting, fabric, etc.). After each run through the press, fixed materials were lifted and re-arranged around/removed from the plate, thus creating subtle variations in tone and changes within the composition.
I found myself smiling while working; the experience was transcendent. Learning new methods to manipulate ink was inspiring.
Exposure to new processes, materials, and fellowship with other artists…. I couldn’t ask for anything more. Monotypes are in my future.
